Three reasons why healthy snacks are important:
1. They provide essential nutrients: healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts provide essential nutrients that your body needs to function properly. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber that can help improve your overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases .

Snacking on high-fiber foods can help you feel full and satisfied, which can prevent overeating at meals. Additionally, choosing healthy snacks over process and high calorie options can help you reduce your overall calorie intake.

Calling all parents of athletes!
Your junior athlete’s fueling and hydration strategy is just as important as the sports specific skills and drills!
Here in the heat of Florida, MORE FLUID WITH SODIUM MAY BE NEEDED IF:
👉🏻 The athlete is a junior athlete (e.g. has not gone through puberty).
👉🏻 Engages in 2+ heavy training sessions/day (to avoid systemic dehydration).
👉🏻 Is unacclimated to training in the heat.
👉🏻 Has a history of heat illness. Symptoms can include: Heavy sweating
Painful muscle cramps
Extreme weakness and/or fatigue
Nausea and/or vomiting
Dizziness and/or headache
Body temperature normal or slightly high
Fainting
Pulse fast and weak
Breathing fast and shallow
Clammy, pale, cool, and/or moist skin
👉🏻 They are drinking plain water and under fueling (not eating). Using sports drinks is a great option.
Hydration is supportive of all of the body’s functions, including energy levels, recovery
and immunity. Drinking adequate fluids is essential to peak performance and brain function, supporting organ function, maintaining proper hunger and appetite signals, and aids in your natural removal of toxins.
💧Did you know that dehydration from one workout affects the next workout?
If they have a hard time staying on top of water intake, here are some tips:
1️⃣ Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, before any breakfast.
2️⃣ Buy a large water bottle that reminds them to drink at intervals throughout the day.
3️⃣ Add a lemon wedge, other fruit or even fresh herbs for added flavor
4️⃣ Make a pitcher of iced herbal tea to mix things up

The importance of licensure for professional services offered by a health provider:
This week I am preparing to go to Tallahassee with Florida dietitians to advocate for nutrition care and access to healthy food for Floridans.
This post was inspiration from a podcast @uglytruthaboutthegirlnextdoor I listen to from a hometown girl who is shedding light on family human trafficking. In her latest episode she talks about church counseling services by these “certified” counselors. There is NO oversight and license for church “counseling” as it is free and un-regulated.
Parents: Do your research. For behavioral health, nutrition care, or any service provided. Requirements are different from state to state.
As an RDN it isn’t easy to maintain my license. I have VERY specific requirements for continuing education as I have to demonstrate an understanding and competence of complex nutritional topics for diseases and conditions, and abide by HIPAA laws.
People who want to skirt these requirements will give you every reason why deregulation is the answer. I can tell you that it is not.
Did you know? Even within the medical community we have a scope of practice. We all work as interdisciplinary team for client/patient care. So when you see social media influencers who happen to be doctors such as a dermatologist making nutrition recommendations, do your research! Are they qualified to offer that advice or is it their own personal belief system?
A recent case in point: celebrity “what I eat and do in a day” interviews. It’s damaging and it’s unnecessary. Dietitians are in the trenches. We see eating disorders and we see the impact you have on people! They see you as thin and “ideal” and think their behavior has to match yours. If many people are like you describe, we called that malnourished.
